My wife and I often use the Dining Guide to decide if we will go to a particular restaurant or not. Since I am a vegetarian (she is not), my choices are quite limited. So when a review states that a restaurant is Vegetarian Friendly, I am really interested.
However, my experience has been that the Vegetarian Friendly statement often is incorrect. Many places offer either a veggie burger or pasta with marinara sauce as their vegetarian options. Is this friendly? How often would you like to go out to a restaurant if all that was available was a hamburger or pasta with marinara sauce? Not really worth the time or money.
But what really prompted this post was the recent review for Chicken 'N' Chips. It is checked as vegetarian friendly. Let's see..... chicken, haddock, steak, clams, scallops.... doesn't sound vegetarian friendly to me. This is the type of place where we would ask to look at a menu before being seated - just to see if there would be something for me to eat. Often we walk away from a place after realizing it is not "friendly" to vegetarians.
As a long-time subscriber and reader of the Dining reviews, I have concluded that the reviewer(s) do not understand that a vegetarian is a person who eats only plant-based food. They appear to believe that a vegetarian is someone who does not eat red meat. A vegetarian does not eat chicken, haddock, steak, clams, scallops or other foods derived from animals. Of course there are strict vegetarians and occasional vegetarians, but approximately 5% of the US population claim to be vegetarian at some level.
It would be very helpful if the "vegetarian friendly" category was accurately described, or just eliminate it completely.
